The 5th Annual Symposium is on the books! Another successful Infrastructure Design and Construction Symposium took place on April 23rd thanks to the commitment and hard work of the committee, volunteers, moderators, panel members, and attendees. The active participation of the 650 individuals who attended the Symposium is what makes this event so exceptional. We had 25 compelling sessions in which industry leaders shared their experience and expertise on each topic. The discussions were very informative and provided all attendees with an opportunity to learn new techniques and ideas, as well as to provide unique insight into some of the difficult construction tasks that we face here in Central Texas.
Over lunch, we heard from Ryan Rowney, Manager of the Lower Colorado River Authority Dam and Hydro Operations, regarding the Highland Lakes dams and infrastructure security. His informative presentation provided some important insights on how our way of life should not be taken for granted. Even though you might not think Austin would rank high on a terrorist watch list, it is an eye opening experience to see just how vulnerable we would be without proper precautions. We emphatically thank Ryan and all individuals that take measures to keep our infrastructure safe & secure, whether it is detecting and arresting individuals who are illegally trying to survey the dam, knowing that C-4 explosives can periodically go unaccounted for at our nearby military bases, and realizing the fact that construction drawings of a Texas school were reportedly found in an Al Qaeda safe house.
The Symposium is a valuable instrument for attendees to identify unresolved issues that affect the Central Texas construction industry and utilize ACEA as a tool to reconcile these issues in a positive manner. As a direct result of comments and suggestions made at the 2007 Symposium, the Board of Directors has taken steps to address these concerns and has created several new committees and/or subcommittees over the past year. A few examples are the ADA Regulatory subcommittee, Training committee, and other action items handled directly by the Regulatory committee. These are just a few examples of how your participation at the Symposium will generate results and improvements that will positively influence construction practices in this area. Based on your discussions and comments during this year's Symposium, the committee will soon be reporting potential action items to the Board for implementation.
On behalf of the 2008 ACEA Symposium Committee, we thank all who were able to attend for contributing to another successful and beneficial event.
